The state-owned Turkmen Telecom has been the primary provider of public telephone, email and internet services, and through a subsidiary has been operating a GSM mobile network in competition with a private mobile operator, BCTI (BCTI became MTS Turkmenistan in 2005).
Turkmenistan gained access to the Internet in 1997 through a contract with MCI Communications (later became MCI WorldCom). A small number of independent Internet Service Providers were forced out of business in 2001 when Turkmentelecom was granted a monopoly over data services.
By June 2025, Arkadag became the first city in Turkmenistan with a pilot 5G network, implemented in cooperation with China’s Huawei and using the national satellite for backhaul . This 5G pilot is an exception – nationwide, Turkmenistan’s mobile data operates mostly on slower 3G/4G technologies.
In summary, satellite connectivity in Turkmenistan exists behind the scenes for state use and select entities, but it is not a solution available to the general public under the current regime’s policies.
