In 2005, total access to electricity in Bolivia was 67%, one of the lowest in Latin America. Urban access was 87%, while rural access remained as low as 30%. During that time, Bolivia had one of the longest power transmission grids in South America with a length of several hundred kilometers, though it is unknown if these power schemes were connected before creation of the national grid in 1965. Electrification supplied larger cities and the mining sector, while rural area were mostly neglected.
