July 25, 2025 – With 278 lithium-ion battery units—each weighing more than 84,000 lb—now drawing and storing power from Ontario’s electricity grid, the Oneida Energy Storage Project has officially entered commercial operation, becoming the largest battery energy storage facility in operation in Canada, and among the largest globally.
The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget and is the largest battery energy storage facility in operation in Canada. “Today marks a major milestone for Northland and the Oneida project,” said Christine Healy, President & Chief Executive Officer of Northland.
When combined with the previous round of the procurement and the Oneida Battery Storage Facility, Ontario’s entire storage fleet will be comprised of 26 facilities with a total capacity of 2,916 MW, exceeding the government’s initial target of 2,500 MW.
Battery storage provides a number of services to the grid, helping to balance electricity supply and demand and ensuring grid reliability and resilience. “Being able to move energy from times of surplus to times of need is a real asset,” says Vittoria Bellissimo, president and CEO of the Canadian Renewable Energy Association.
